Katherine began her meditation journey back in 2008 after spending many years looking outside of herself for answers and fulfillment. She began a meditation practice and found it to be an incredibly fulfilling experience that allowed her to retrain her mind to be more focused, balanced and compassionate. She found she was able to be more aligned with her values which opened up an opportunity to form a deeper relationship with herself. After spending many months breathing deeper, following mantras and tuning into her power within, she experienced many positive changes in her life and she realized the true connection she had been searching for was within herself. She also experienced incredible stress relief and was able to greatly reduce her level of tension and anxiety. She began teaching classes and leading workshops and knew that she had found her passion spreading knowledge and creating peaceful and healing spaces for people to do this kind of work.
Katherine majored in Psychology & Anthropology at the University of Vermont. She has also done graduate training in mental health counseling and is certified by the McLean Meditation Institute, which has allowed her to deepen her studies in the art of meditation and relaxation. Her passions are teaching meditation, exploring the healing vibrations of sound and motivating and inspiring others to be the best that they can be. She has also been certified as a trained facilitator of group empowerment drumming through Remo Drum Corporation and enjoys facilitating drum circles in order to connect people on a deeper level.
∞ WHY Meditate? ∞
"Nowhere can man find a quieter or more untroubled retreat than in his own soul." ~Marcus Aurelius
Finding inner peace

Meditation is an age old practice that has been around for thousands of years. The word meditation comes from the latin root mederi which mean "to heal". We are living in a culture that has lost it's connection to the intelligence of our bodies, hearts and intuitive guidance systems. We are bombarded with external stimulation leaving us feeling exhausted, overwhelmed and disconnected from our true selves, center and power within.
So WHAT can we do?
It is important for us to create a safe and healing space to remember how to BE without any doing involved. We are human BEINGS not human DOINGS . When we take the time to breathe and cultivate stillness within, we allow our bodies to turn on the relaxation response and tune into present moment awareness. When we become present, we allow ourselves to drop the stories of past and future that can cloud our vision. As Lao Tzu said,
“If you are depressed you are living in the past.
If you are anxious you are living in the future.
If you are at peace you are living in the present."
∞ MEDITATION & THE BRAIN ∞
Scientists used to think the brain reached its peak in adulthood and then started to decrease in function later in life. Now the term neuroplasticity has been coined and exciting new research is showing that the brain is constantly changing and growing with every new experience that we have. It is up to us what kind of shape our brain is in.
So WHAT does this have to do with meditation?
Recent studies at UCLA School of Medicine are showing "that daily meditators had more gray matter in regions of the brain that are important for attention, emotion regulation, and mental flexibility. Increased gray matter typically makes an area of the brain more efficient or powerful at processing information. Luders (Researcher in the Department of Neurology ) believes that the increased gray matter in the meditators’ brains should make them better at controlling their attention, managing their emotions, and making mindful choices" (McGonical, Kelly. "Learn: This is Your Brain On Meditation").

Katherine is a meditation teacher and life coach who is interested in helping her clients become more grounded and centered within themselves through breathing, meditation and relaxation techniques. Once this foundation is established within, the benefits are endless. Switching from victim mode to empowerment mode causes a monumental shift in our lives. We begin to change and transform into a higher vision of ourselves as we become aware of the fears and perceived limitations we need to rewire and release. This type of work allows us to believe in something greater as we uncover our potential and tap into our deep reserves of power, peace and love within ourselves.

BUILD community and rhythm
"Life is about rhythm. We vibrate, our hearts are pumping blood, we are a rhythm machine, that's what we are." ~ Mickey Hart
started their drum journey back in 2001 at a beautiful lodge in Wisconsin where they learned from some amazing teachers including Will Schmid (head of the World Music Drumming program) and Sowah Mensah, master drummer from Ghana. Sally used this drumming curriculum with middle school students in the school systems and noticed such a huge difference in behavior, attention and the ability to focus. Katherine and Sally decided to further their drumming education in 2013 and attended Remo's HealthRHYTHMS training as well as Arthur Hull's amazing playshop. They studied and experienced the therapeutic benefits of group drumming from Dr. Barry Bittman and Christine Stevens. They became certified group empowerment drum facilitators through the Remo Drum Corporation.

Did you know that we heard our mother's heartbeat at 80 dB (decibels) in the womb? This is about as loud as a jackhammer or a motorcycle passing you on the street! Wow. No wonder we are so drawn to the rhythms and sounds of the drum.
BENEFITS of Group Drumming
"When you can't feel anything else, you can always feel the beat."
∞ Drumming is a universal language and EVERYONE can participate. You don't have to have years and years of practice to be able to join in and enjoy the benefits of a drum circle.
∞ Scientific studies by Dr. Barry Bittman at the Meadville Medical Center have shown that group drumming not only reduces stress but enhances the immune system.
∞ Drumming helps us to connect with self and others
∞ Drumming reminds us of the power of the present moment
∞ Drumming is FUN! Drumming releases endorphins in the human brain that cause feelings of happiness and euphoria. It’s a great reason to gather with other people, to share in a common experience, and to do something enjoyable. A participant in a drum circle is part of a whole that is much greater than the sum of its parts, and drumming is accessible to an extremely wide range of people. Drumming is fun and that’s the bottom line* (Dave Roberts, 2010)

BOOMWHACKERS ... boom chicka what?
Who knew plastic tubes could be so much fun?!
Boomwhackers are a great way to make rhythm & music ! Who knew that plastic tubes could not only be tuned to the notes in the musical scale BUT also be so much fun! You can even pretend you are a Yoda warrior with a lightsaber while making beautiful rhythms and sounds. Who could ask for a better combination?
~master cowbell player, grandmother / mother extraordinaire
My grandmother was an inspiration to our family and the many lives she touched. After I came up with the idea of group drumming, we knew she had to be involved in some way. She decided to take the role of the master cowbell player. I never met a 97 year old with such incredible rhythm and determination. She never missed a beat as our cowbell player nor in her life. Joan had a passion for music ever since she was a little girl and went on to teach piano for 85 years. She never acted her age and is very much missed.

"The thing about meditation is: You become more and more You." ~ David Lynch
"Why are you knocking at every other door? Go, knock at the door of your own heart." ~ Rumi
"You should sit in meditation for twenty minutes a day, unless you're too busy, then you should sit for an hour." ~ Old Zen saying
Treat yourself with the highest level of respect
Adorn yourself like the goddess / god that you are
you are royalty, you are worthy
Even if nobody is looking, your higher self is
Even if nobody is treating you with respect
You are the most important person
to set the standard
for how amazing, worthy and deserving you truly are
then you radiate this energy, this vibration outwards
and the whole world feels it
and gives you back the respect that you demand within yourself ...
never settle for anything less
It all starts within. ~ K
